In a perplexing medical case that has garnered attention in China, a 27-year-old woman was found to have a testicle in her abdomen, leading to her being declared male by doctors.
The discovery was made during a routine medical examination by gynecologist Duan Jie, who described the condition as exceptionally rare, occurring in only 1 out of 50,000 infants.
The woman, identified as Li Yuan, exhibited male sex chromosomes but possessed female hormones, as per local medical professionals. This unique condition, known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, resulted in Li having the genetic makeup of a male but outwardly appearing female.
Duan Jie emphasized the social and chromosomal complexities of Li’s case, stating, “Socially, Li is female. But chromosomally, she is male.”
Li’s medical history revealed concerns dating back to her teenage years, when she experienced a lack of menstruation and delayed breast development. However, she did not seek medical attention until later in life.
Upon examination, Li’s abnormal hormone levels indicated potential ovarian failure, which was likely exacerbated by her lack of treatment and accompanying vitamin D deficiency.
Doctors warned of the heightened risk of cancer if the undescended testicle remained untreated. Consequently, Li underwent successful surgery to remove the testicle from her abdomen, resolving the unusual medical anomaly.
