(Daily Point) — Mainz FC, a German football club, has terminated its contract with Anwar El Ghazi due to his social media posts related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a statement released on Friday, Mainz announced the termination of El Ghazi’s contract, citing “remarks and social media posts made by the player” as the reason, without providing additional details.
Before his contract termination, El Ghazi had been suspended by the club in the past for a social media post about the Middle East conflict, which has since been deleted. He was allowed to resume practice earlier this week.
On October 27, El Ghazi clarified his stance on social media, stating that he supports peace and the well-being of all people and does not endorse terrorism, including that associated with Hamas. Mainz initially ended his suspension and gave him a second chance.
However, in a subsequent social media post, El Ghazi suggested that the club had released its statement without obtaining his consent. He reiterated his commitment to his position, expressing concern for the loss of innocent lives in both Palestine and Israel, and called for an end to the violence in Gaza.
German prosecutors had also accused El Ghazi of “disrupting public order by endorsing criminal activities alongside promoting hatred” in his social media posts before his contract termination.
