ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — A seven-member committee has been established by the caretaker government to oversee the upcoming general elections in the country.

The committee, officially notified on Thursday, will be headed by the caretaker minister for maritime affairs and will include chief secretaries from all four provinces, along with the federal interior secretary. Additionally, the committee has the provision to co-opt a seventh member.

The committee’s responsibilities, as outlined in its terms of reference, encompass:

  1. Supervising the security arrangements for the upcoming general elections.
  2. Reviewing and resolving administrative matters related to the electoral process.
  3. Issuing directives for additional security in situations where the law and order demand it urgently.
  4. Implementing directives from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure a smooth and orderly conduct of the elections.

Scheduled for February 8, the general elections date was determined after a prolonged period of uncertainty, following the Supreme Court’s directive to the Election Commission of Pakistan to consult with the president. Nomination papers have been filed, and symbols have been allotted to candidates. However, there are concerns raised by some quarters, particularly regarding security matters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
