ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — Former ISI Director General Faiz Hamid has provided his statement to the Faizabad sit-in commission, refuting allegations of conspiring against the government, according to sources from private TV channel Geo News.
Summoned three times by the panel investigating the 2017 Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) sit-in, Hamid failed to appear but responded to a questionnaire, stating that he negotiated with TLP on government orders.
The commission had initially summoned him on January 2, marking his third absence from the hearings. Established in November by the caretaker federal government following the Supreme Court’s 2019 Faizabad verdict, the inquiry commission, led by retired IGP Akhtar Ali Shah, is empowered to summon various individuals.
Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa had emphasized the commission’s authority to summon figures like former army chiefs, prime ministers, and chief justices. The inquiry commission, expected to submit its report to the Supreme Court on January 22, had also summoned PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif on January 3, who requested a questionnaire.
Sharif has now received a 21-point questionnaire. Previously, figures like Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal, and Fawad Hasan Fawad appeared before the probe panel.
In November 2017, the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of a three-week-long sit-in against changes to the finality-of-Prophethood oath in the Elections Act 2017. The sit-in concluded with an agreement between protesters and the government. In February 2019, the Supreme Court recommended stringent actions against those issuing edicts to harm others, emphasizing prosecution under relevant laws.
