(Daily Point) — Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, New Zealand’s youngest Member of Parliament, garnered widespread internet acclaim following her inaugural appearance in the parliamentary chamber, where she showcased a traditional Haka.
In a historic milestone, Maipi-Clarke, at 21 years old, became the youngest MP in New Zealand’s 170-year history of democracy.
Belonging to the Māori tribe, Maipi-Clarke hails from a cultural heritage rich in ceremonial dances, with the Haka being a prominent ritual performed before wars or games. In her impassioned address, she directed a message to the Māori youth, encouraging them to embrace their native language and cultural identity.
Addressing those who may have felt marginalized, she stated, “To the tamariki Maori who have been sitting in the back of their classroom their whole life, whakama, waiting generations longing to learn their native tongue, to the tamariki who haven’t been to their pepeha yet, it is waiting for you with open arms.” Maipi-Clarke emphasized the importance of embracing individuality, declaring, “Never fit in. You are perfect. You are the perfect fit.”
While pledging genuine representation for her constituents, the young MP delivered a powerful speech during her mid-December debut in the Parliament. However, it was her captivating performance of the traditional Haka that resonated globally and left fellow members visibly impressed.
