(Daily Point) — March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements, strengths, and contributions to the world.
This year, the United Nations has chosen the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” highlighting the importance of investing in women for societal advancement. Additionally, the International Women’s Day website has selected the theme “Inspire Inclusion,” emphasizing the need for gender inclusivity.
Google Doodle for this year features a depiction of “a group of women sharing wisdom across generations within a quilt embroidered with symbols of progress over the years,” created by Sophia Dosy. Dosy expressed her hope that the doodle would encourage people to engage with individuals from different age groups.
The origins of International Women’s Day trace back to February 28, 1909, when it was first celebrated in the United States. Initiated by the Socialist Party of America, the day was dedicated to honoring the 1908 garment workers who protested against poor working conditions. Around 15,000 women participated in marches across the city, advocating for voting rights, fair pay, and reduced work hours.
Subsequently, Russian women, who protested for peace before World War I, began observing International Women’s Day on February 23. This date was later adjusted to March 8 to align with international conventions.
