Spanish footballer Jose Ignacio Peleterio, commonly known as ‘Jota’, has recently embraced Islam, adding his name to the growing list of footballers worldwide who have chosen to follow the religion.
In a heartfelt video message, Jota expressed his decision to convert to Islam after gaining knowledge about its teachings from an old friend. Upon entering the fold of the religion, he was warmly welcomed by his friend’s mother, who presented him with a cake adorned with the words “Welcome to Islam.”
Jota, who played his last professional match in 2021, now joins a notable group of footballers who have embraced Islam in recent times. Among them is Dutch football star Clarence Seedorf, who announced his conversion in March 2022. Seedorf, known for his remarkable achievement of winning the UEFA Champions League with three different clubs, shared his decision via an Instagram post, revealing that his Iranian-born wife, Sofia, introduced him to Islam.
Additionally, former Barcelona player Eric Abidal converted to Islam in 2007, citing its support during his battle with liver cancer in 2011. These instances highlight the diverse paths through which footballers find solace and guidance in their spiritual journeys.
