New regulations introduced in January 2024 have significantly tightened visa requirements for international students enrolling in British universities, leading to a drastic reduction in the number of applications for student-dependent visas.
The UK Home Office reports an 80% decrease compared to the previous year, with approximately 140,000 fewer individuals expected to enter the UK as a result.
These changes, aimed at preventing the misuse of student visas for employment purposes, mark a notable shift in the visa application process. The UK government’s broader strategy to reduce migration includes stricter health and care visas, higher salary thresholds, and a review of post-study work visas. Notably, Indian nationals, who make up 43% of students granted leave to remain, are significantly impacted by these policies.
Minimum salary requirements for UK visa applicants have also seen a substantial increase, rising to £38,700 as of April 11, 2024, representing a nearly 50% hike from the previous threshold. While certain exemptions exist, such as in health and social care roles, overseas care workers face challenges in bringing family dependents.
Family visa applicants seeking to reside with relatives in the UK for over six months must now meet stringent criteria, including demonstrating proficiency in English and meeting a minimum income threshold. Initially set at £38,700, the threshold was later reduced to £29,000 amidst concerns about the risk of family separation.
For student visas, significant changes have occurred, with a focus on limiting dependents’ inclusion to specific circumstances, such as designated research programs. Postgraduate students are now only able to bring dependents if their course meets certain criteria. Additionally, graduates can stay in the UK for up to two or three years, depending on their degree level, under a graduate visa.
