(Web Desk Monitoring) — Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister and founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has alleged that the Punjab government is confining him like a terrorist at Adiala Jail.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Khan claimed he is being held in a 7x8ft death cell, typically reserved for terrorists, with no contact with others. He described his confinement as solitary, with minimal space to move, under constant surveillance by government agencies, which he argued violates basic prisoner and human rights.
Previously, the government submitted a report to the Supreme Court stating that Khan was provided with all necessary facilities in jail, including exercise equipment, a room cooler, and food of his choice. A recent viral picture of Khan’s cell on social media showed a relatively spacious room with a bed and other amenities.
Sources familiar with the situation claimed that since Maryam Nawaz became Chief Minister of Punjab, she has tightened rules for Khan, instructing jail officials to treat him like any other prisoner and deny him extra privileges.
The interview was conducted through Khan’s legal team, as he is not allowed to use pencils and paper. Khan has been held at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for almost a year following convictions in several cases. Despite securing bail or having some convictions overturned, the former cricketer-turned-politician remains incarcerated.
