NEW YORK (Daily Point0 — Apple (AAPL.O) has initiated discussions in recent weeks with prominent news and publishing entities, seeking approval to utilize their content in the development of generative artificial intelligence systems, as reported by The New York Times.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the tech giant has proposed multiyear agreements valued at a minimum of $50 million to obtain licenses for the archives of news articles.
The news outlets approached by Apple include Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue and the New Yorker, NBC News, and IAC, the owner of People, the Daily Beast, and Better Homes and Gardens, according to The New York Times.
However, the report indicates that some publishers approached by Apple expressed tepid interest in the proposition.
As of now, Apple has not responded to a Reuters request for comment.
In the broader tech landscape, major companies have been making substantial investments to integrate generative AI. In contrast, Apple has utilized this technology to enhance fundamental features in its latest devices.
Additionally, in October, Apple unveiled new MacBook Pro and iMac computers, along with three new chips to power them, emphasizing their applicability for artificial intelligence researchers whose creations, such as chatbots, are often constrained by the computer’s memory capacity.
