WASHINGTON (Daily Point) — American professional boxer Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, following in the footsteps of boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, has embraced Islam.
The 29-year-old, a former three-division world champion, attended a mosque on Sunday to pray ‘Dhuhr’ and took the shahadah along with two friends.
Davis, who previously identified with the Christian faith and still bears a cross tattoo on his right arm, is renowned not only for his boxing prowess but also for his philanthropic endeavors. The WBC cruiserweight champion, Badou Jack, extended a warm welcome to Davis on X, expressing, “Welcome to Islam, brother Gervontaa. Alhamdulillah,” accompanied by a video clip capturing Davis and his friends reciting the shahadah.
The Islamic community responded with congratulatory messages and welcoming remarks to Davis, who holds an undefeated record of 29-0. Despite his success, he has yet to secure an undisputed lightweight title or become a unified champion.
With Devin Haney’s departure from the division in 2023, new opportunities have emerged for Davis to pursue these accolades. His most recent fight in April resulted in a TKO victory over Ryan Garcia.
