LAHORE (Daily Point) – In response to directives from Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the Lahore traffic police has taken immediate action, conducting extensive operations to arrest underage drivers.

The police took this action in the wake of a devastating road accident in the Defence area last week that claimed the lives of six family members.

Prompted by the tragic incident, the Lahore traffic police conducted a series of crackdowns over four days, resulting in the apprehension of 1,632 underage drivers, with cases filed against each of them.

The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore issued show cause notices to six sector in-charges, citing inadequate enforcement during the operations.

Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s order for a province-wide crackdown on underage drivers follows the recent fatal accident in Lahore, where an underage driver caused the loss of six lives.

The caretaker chief minister underscored the importance of impartial and stringent actions against underage drivers, urging the Inspector General (IG) Punjab, Chief Commissioner of Police (CCPO), and all Regional Police Officers (RPOs) to provide daily reports on measures taken against underage drivers.

Naqvi also called on parents to discourage their underage children from operating vehicles or motorcycles.

The tragic car accident in Lahore’s Defence Phase 7 involved a family returning home after visiting relatives. The collision occurred near a roundabout when a car driven by a teenage boy, identified as Afnan Shafqat, intentionally crashed into the family’s vehicle, leading to fatal consequences. The crackdown on underage drivers aims to address this alarming issue and enhance road safety in the region.
