(Daily Point) — Islamabad and its surrounding areas experienced the effects of a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, as reported by the seismological center on Monday.
The earthquake originated from the Doda district in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), with a depth of 140 kilometers. Panic ensued among residents when the tremors struck at 3:19 pm.
The seismic activity extended to other regions, including Samahni and Bhimbhar in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Peshawar. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damages in the aftermath of the quake.
Zainab Tariq, a 27-year-old student in Islamabad, shared her experience, stating that while she felt the tremors, they were not excessively strong. She recounted being in her room when the building began shaking, prompting her to run downstairs. Surprisingly, she observed few people outside, leading her to believe that not many had felt the earthquake.
Pakistan, situated on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, frequently experiences natural disasters such as earthquakes. The tectonic activity arises from the Indian plate pushing north into the Eurasian plate, contributing to the seismic vulnerability of South Asia.
The recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the critical need for disaster preparedness and mitigation measures in the region.
