Govt to launch easy installment scheme for buying mobile phones next week

Mobile phones tax easy Installment

(Daily Point) — In a significant development, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, in collaboration with telecom operators, is set to unveil a highly anticipated initiative on January 12, 2024, aimed at providing mobile handsets through convenient installment plans.

During discussions with a group of journalists, Dr. Umar Saif, the caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, revealed that one telecom operator is considering offering Apple iPhones on installment plans. Emphasizing responsible financial behavior, Dr. Saif highlighted that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) would employ the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) to block handsets in case of installment payment failures.

The overarching goal of the initiative is to make smartphones more accessible, particularly among low-income segments in Pakistan. Dr. Saif explained that under this policy, telecom companies would have the opportunity to directly provide smartphones to customers through installment plans, thereby expanding the benefits of mobile broadband.

In addition to this development, Dr. Saif announced plans for the launch of 5G in July next year, with a 300 MHz spectrum set to be auctioned. The Minister credited the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SFIC) for overcoming obstacles related to the Advisory Committee for Spectrum Auction, the establishment of optical fiber cable networks across the country, and the effective implementation of the Right of Way Policy.

Dr. Saif shared that the government is initiating a project on January 11 to establish 10,000 e-Rozgar Centres nationwide. These centers will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities tailored for freelancers and startups, addressing the challenges faced by approximately 1.5 million freelancers who lack suitable workspaces. The move is considered a historic initiative to foster the growth of freelancers and startups across the country.
