(Web Desk Monitoring) — Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, has been killed in Tehran, Iran, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The group governing Gaza has accused Israel of being behind the assassination. According to Hamas, Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when their residence in Tehran was struck. Haniyeh was reportedly in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack, stating that the circumstances are still under investigation. Israel has yet to comment officially on Haniyeh’s death, although far-right Minister Amihai Elihayu celebrated it on social media.
Haniyeh, who had been living in Qatar since 2019, was a significant figure in negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. His death could potentially escalate the ongoing conflict, already heightened by recent Israeli actions in Lebanon.
