DAGGAR (Daily Point) — In a historic development, a woman belonging to the Hindu community in Pakistan is poised to participate in the upcoming general elections in the Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr Saveera Parkash has successfully passed the scrutiny of her documents, paving the way for her candidacy in the PK-25 constituency of the KP Assembly. Additionally, she has filed nomination papers for reserved seats in both the national and provincial assemblies.

Dr Parkash, a graduate of Abbottabad International Medical College (class of 2022), currently serves as the general secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) women’s wing in Buner. Her father, Dr. Om Parkash, a recent retiree, has been an active member of the PPP for the past 35 years.

Competing in the polls scheduled for February 8, 2024, Dr. Saveera Parkash will face notable figures such as Awami National Party (ANP) leader Sardar Hussain Babak, former minister Riaz Khan, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) leader Mufti Fazal Ghafoor.

Expressing her surprise at the overwhelming response from local residents, Dr. Parkash noted that even leaders and supporters of religious parties have acknowledged and appreciated her decision to contest the election.

In a parallel milestone, Sobia Khan, a transgender individual from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has filed nomination papers for the provincial assembly seat in constituency PK-81. Running as an independent candidate, Sobia aims to champion the rights of the transgender community, women, and children if elected.

With a Bachelor’s degree and the distinction of being the first transgender radio jockey in the province, Sobia Khan is determined to challenge societal perceptions that limit the potential contributions of the transgender community. Her election campaign strategy includes extensive door-to-door outreach in the constituency, seeking support from both men and women in the area.
