ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — Supreme Court (SC) Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi resigned from his position on Wednesday amid an ongoing hearing of a reference against him in the Supreme Judicial Council.
The reference included allegations related to his assets, and an alleged audio recording surfaced during the proceedings. Justice Mazahar submitted a detailed statement to the council and subsequently sent his resignation to President Dr. Arif Alvi.
In his resignation letter, Justice Mazahar stated that it was not possible for him to continue in his position, emphasizing the honor he felt for serving in the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court. Earlier, he had responded to a show cause notice from the Supreme Judicial Council, denying the allegations and asserting that the council could gather information but could not act on complaints against a judge.
Justice Mazahar objected to the appointment of the Attorney General as a prosecutor, highlighting that one of the complainants was the Pakistan Bar Council. He also mentioned a meeting between the Pakistan Bar and then Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where a resolution to file the complaint was approved.
The judge contested the order to summon witnesses before responding to the show cause notice, claiming it was against the law. He refuted allegations that he could be easily approached and clarified administrative aspects related to the Ghulam Mahmood Dogar case, asserting that no relief was granted in that matter. The Supreme Judicial Council has issued another show cause notice, demanding a response within 14 days.
