Large-scale data breach exposes millions of records on Dark Web

Data breach leak dark web

AT&T, a prominent telecommunications giant in the US, has confirmed a significant data breach affecting millions of its current and former users, with the leaked information surfacing on the dark web, as reported by the company.

The compromised data reportedly includes social security numbers, addresses, and passwords. While AT&T has launched an investigation into the breach, it emphasized that there is currently no evidence of data theft, according to BBC reports.

In response to the breach, AT&T has already taken action by resetting the passcodes of its customers and has urged users to remain vigilant by monitoring their account activity and credit reports.

The leaked data pertains to customers from 2019 or earlier, impacting approximately 7.6 million current customers and 65.4 million former account holders. Notably, AT&T clarified that financial information was not included in the leak and is actively determining whether the data originated from its own systems or from a third-party supplier.

Despite this breach, AT&T continues to serve around 290 million users in the US, providing wireless 5G network services.

Earlier this year, AT&T faced another significant challenge when it experienced a major service blackout in February, prompting the Texas-based company to issue apologies and offer $5 credits to affected customers.

Following the blackout incident, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initiated an investigation, while the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) announced its collaboration with AT&T to ascertain the cause of the outage.
