Maryam Nawaz asks SC judges to support Pakistan’s progress

Maryam Nawaz SC Judges

(Web Desk Monitoring) — Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz criticized the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to claim reserved seats in parliament, urging the judges to support the country’s progress.

Addressing an event in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz accused the Supreme Court judges of altering the constitution to facilitate the return of a specific individual to mainstream politics. She questioned, “Who are those people who do not like the country making progress and rewrite the Constitution?”

On July 12, the Supreme Court ruled that PTI was eligible for the allocation of reserved seats, a significant legal victory for the party. This decision not only paved the way for PTI’s return to parliament—after being expelled following the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) December 2023 ruling—but also increased pressure on the coalition alliance by changing the National Assembly’s composition.

Maryam Nawaz claimed that the Supreme Court granted PTI relief beyond what the party had sought, giving them 15 days to submit affidavits affirming their affiliation with PTI despite already submitting documents supporting another party. She asserted, “We will not let this be a cakewalk for you. This government will complete its five-year tenure. If anyone tries to create political instability, they will be dealt with iron hands.”

She criticized the Supreme Court’s justification that their decisions were based on conscience, emphasizing that verdicts should align with the constitution. Maryam also referred to the individual being brought back as a criminal, questioning the source of his support and funding. She highlighted that a small group of people issued orders that hindered development and criticized the ruling permitting floor crossing, which she argued contradicted the law and constitution.
