Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, reportedly retained gifts from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman by paying Rs180 million, significantly lower than the estimated value of Rs3.16 billion, as per a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) report cited by local English newspaper The News.
The NAB report exposed a lack of a proper system to determine the accurate value of gifts in Pakistan, with items valued at Rs3.16 billion being assessed at just Rs180 million. The gifts were allegedly retained by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and his wife after paying half of the Rs90 million amount.
The report highlighted that no institution in Pakistan could ascertain the value of a jewelry set gifted by the Saudi Crown Prince. According to estimates from Dubai, a loss of Rs1.57 billion was incurred by the treasury.
Efforts to determine the value of the gifts faced obstacles, as various authorities, including the Federal Board of Revenue of Pakistan (FBR) and the Collectorate of Customs, expressed their inability to assess the value. The Industries and Production Division noted inaccessibility of the Gems and Jewellery Development Company for valuation.
Despite MLAs sent to different countries for valuation responses, no conclusive information was obtained. Imran Bashir of Embo Ampex FZE, hired by the Pakistani Consulate General in Dubai, asserted the actual value of the gifts was Rs3.16 billion. Imran and Bushra could have retained the gifts by paying Rs1.57 billion.
The NAB report clarified that there was no evidence implicating government officials for intentionally undervaluing the gifts for financial gain. Consequently, government officials were not implicated in the matter.
