LOS ANGELES (Daily Point) — A stunning evening dress worn by the late Princess Diana has shattered auction estimates, selling for $1.1 million, which is 11 times its initial estimate, announced Julien’s Auctions based in Los Angeles.
The black and blue ballerina-length gown, designed by Jacques Azagury, made its debut on Diana in Florence in 1985 and was later captured in photographs during her visit to Vancouver a year later.
Julien’s Auctions revealed that the dress, accompanied by a matching illustration, commanded a final price of $1,148,080, significantly surpassing its estimated value of $100,000 to $200,000. In a statement, the auction house declared that it now holds the new world record for the highest price paid for a dress worn by Princess Diana at auction, with the previous record standing at $604,800.
The dress features a long black velvet bodice adorned with blue stars and a two-tier blue organza skirt with a sash and bow.
This record-setting sale took place as part of the four-day “Hollywood Legends” auction, a collaboration between Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), which presented a diverse array of memorabilia.
In addition to the iconic gown, a pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana for her 1981 engagement portrait to then-Prince Charles, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel (the same designers of Diana’s wedding dress), also exceeded expectations. The blouse, with an estimated value of $80,000 to $100,000, ultimately sold for $381,000.
