ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning to the public regarding phishing attempts and fraudulent links circulating on WhatsApp, social media, and through text messages.
These misleading communications falsely claim association with PTA’s Device Identification Registration & Blocking System (DIRBS).
The circulating message poses as an official communication, alleging the user’s SIM involvement in “suspicious activities” and prompting them to check the number of SIMs via a provided link. Another variant warns of phone registration suspension unless the user visits the supplied link, as per a news release.
These deceptive tactics aim to lure individuals into clicking on malicious links, putting their personal information at risk. The public is strongly advised against clicking on links from unknown numbers or senders. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to report such phone numbers and links for blocking through PTA’s complaint management system, accessible via a toll-free number (0800-55055), web link (https://complaint.pta.gov.pk/RegisterComplaint.aspx), and the PTA CMS mobile app.
For checking their device status, users are urged to visit https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk, send IMEIs to 8484 from their device via SMS, or use the official Device Verification App, available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
PTA emphasizes the importance of vigilance, urging the public to prioritize the use of official platforms and shortcodes to safeguard their personal information.
