(Web Desk Monitoring) — The Punjab government will provide a Rs14 per unit relief on electricity bills for August and September to consumers using up to 500 units, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif announced on Friday.
“This is a significant relief. Maryam [Nawaz] achieved this by cutting expenses in various government sectors,” Nawaz said during a press conference in Lahore, where he was joined by his daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Nawaz explained that Rs14 per unit would be deducted from electricity bills, and funds worth Rs45 billion from the developmental budget were redirected to offer this relief. He acknowledged concerns over his influence on provincial matters, but Maryam defended her decisions, stating they were made with Nawaz’s consent.
Nawaz also highlighted a previous three-month relief for lifeline consumers using up to 200 units per month, announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This relief, which benefitted 25 million consumers and covered 94% of domestic electricity users, provided a Rs50 billion discount in July, August, and September.
The Punjab CM is also set to introduce a solar panel scheme to further reduce electricity costs. Under the “Roshan Gharana” programme, users of up to 200 units will receive free solar panels, while those using up to 500 units can obtain panels with a 10% payment. The government will cover 90% of the cost, and interest-free loans will be available on a five-year installment plan.
Nawaz urged support for the solar initiative and encouraged other provinces to implement similar programs. He also called for accountability for those responsible for the country’s economic challenges, blaming the inflation on policies from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s tenure.
Nawaz concluded by stating he would provide further details in future press conferences, addressing concerns about his absence from the media and the assembly.
