(Web Desk Monitoring) — The Pakistani government has refuted rumors circulating about a potential social media ban during the holy month of Muharram.
A spokesperson for the Interior Ministry clarified that no decisions have been made regarding temporary restrictions on social media platforms.
This denial follows reports suggesting that the federal government had rejected requests from provincial authorities for limited social media bans during Muharram. The spokesperson emphasized that individual provinces lack the authority to impose such bans independently, reiterating that only the Interior Ministry can instruct the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to implement restrictions.
Hinting at a forthcoming decision, the spokesperson mentioned ongoing consultations with relevant authorities, with an update expected after a meeting scheduled for Saturday.
Concerns have been raised about the potential implications of a social media ban, given the platforms’ significant role in communication, business interactions, familial connections, and journalism across Pakistan. Critics argue that such a ban could disrupt essential communications and may not effectively curb the spread of undesirable content, while also raising concerns about freedom of speech.
Instead of a blanket ban, stakeholders suggest focusing on content moderation strategies and collaboration with social media platforms to ensure online safety during sensitive periods like Muharram.
