T20 World Cup 2024 schedule

The 2024 T20 World Cup will kick off on June 1 at 7:30 PM local time, with co-hosts USA facing Canada in the opening match. The tournament will continue until June 29. The first game will take place at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, while the final will be held in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Here’s the complete schedule for the 2024 T20 World Cup:

WHo Will Host World Cup and Venues

The West Indies and the USA will co-host the T20 World Cup, marking the first time the USA will host a major ICC tournament. The West Indies have previously hosted two men’s World Cups: a 50-over edition in 2007 and a T20 World Cup in 2010. Additionally, two women’s T20 World Cups have been held in the Caribbean.

For the 2024 T20 World Cup, India has been allotted the semi-final match in Guyana on June 27. The tournament will be played across nine venues, including Dallas, Bridgetown, Providence, New York, Lauderhill, North Sound, Gros Islet, Kingstown, and Tarouba.

Which Teams To Participate

This year’s T20 World Cup features a record 20 teams. In addition to the co-hosts, West Indies and USA, the eight best-placed teams from the 2022 edition have automatically qualified: England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia, and the Netherlands. Afghanistan and Bangladesh also secured automatic qualification based on their positions in the men’s T20I team rankings.

Ireland and Scotland advanced through the European qualifier, while Canada triumphed in the Americas qualifier. Nepal and Oman progressed from the Asia qualifier, and Namibia and Uganda were the two teams to qualify from Africa. Papua New Guinea won the East Asia-Pacific qualifier.

Format for T20 World Cup 2024

The 20 teams have been divided into four groups of five teams each. In the group stage, each team will play against every other team in their group once. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, which will feature two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each Super Eight group will then progress to the semi-finals.

Super Eights

Eight teams have been given pre-determined seedings for the Super Eight stage, which they will retain if they qualify. The teams and their seedings are as follows:

  • A1 – India
  • A2 – Pakistan
  • B1 – England
  • B2 – Australia
  • C1 – New Zealand
  • C2 – West Indies
  • D1 – South Africa
  • D2 – Sri Lanka

The seedings for the other teams are not fixed. If D1 and D2 qualify from Group D and D2 tops the group, D2 will not take the D1 slot in the Super Eight stage. They will continue with the fixtures scheduled for D2. However, if D3 or D4 qualify instead of D1, the qualified team will replace D1 in the Super Eight. If both D3 and D4 qualify, the group topper will take D1’s fixtures, and the second-placed team will take D2’s fixtures.

The Super Eight groups will be as follows:

  • Group 1: A1, B2, C1, D2
  • Group 2: A2, B1, C2, D1

The fixtures for the Super Eight stage, starting June 19, are already scheduled based on these seedings. No points will be carried forward from the first round to the second.

What happens if a match ends in a tie?

A Super Over will be used to decide every tied match. If the Super Over also ends in a tie, additional Super Overs will be played until a winner is determined.

How are matches decided if the weather plays spoilsport?

In the event of rain or bad weather during the group stage and Super Eight matches, each team must bat for at least five overs for a result to be declared. For the semi-finals and the final, each team must bat for a minimum of ten overs for a result to be possible, as was the case in the previous edition.

What about the knockout matches?

The first semi-final and the final have reserve days, but the second semi-final does not, due to the one-day gap between it and the final. Each semi-final has up to 250 minutes of additional time available. The first semi-final, on June 26, will have an extra 60 minutes at the end of the day’s play and an additional 190 minutes the next day, starting at 2 PM local time. The second semi-final, on June 27, will have 250 minutes available on the scheduled day, as it does not have a reserve day.

The final has a reserve day on June 30, with play scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM local time, and a maximum of 190 minutes extra available on both days. If the first semi-final or the final is shortened (e.g., to ten overs per side) and cannot be completed on the scheduled day due to weather interruptions, it will resume on the reserve day from the point where play was abandoned.

India will play the second semi-final if they reach the knockout stage.

What happens if the semi-finals and/or final are abandoned?

If weather conditions prevent a semi-final from being completed, the team that finished first in their Super Eight group will progress to the final. The same rule applies if the Super Over after a tied semi-final cannot be played due to poor weather. If the final or the Super Over after a tied final is abandoned because of poor weather, the two teams will be declared joint winners.
