KARACHI (Daily Point) — Transgender individuals are set to actively participate in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024, according to an announcement made by representatives of the transgender community.

During a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club, Bindia Rana, Dr Meereb Awan, and Shehzadi Rai disclosed their intention for trans individuals to contest in the elections.

On the other hand, the transgender community is organising the Moorat March at Frere Hall in Karachi on November 19. The march is aimed to advocate for fundamental rights, including the right to inheritance. Shehzadi Rai emphasized the pervasive violence faced by trans people under the pretext of honour.

Leaders from the transgender community addressed issues such as the lack of employment opportunities and called for an end to policies that disregard the rights of trans individuals. They urged the government to eliminate discriminatory practices against transgender individuals from the legal framework.

The press conference also criticised the Sindh government for its failure to fulfill job quotas allocated for the transgender community. Bindia Rana highlighted that the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has ceased the issuance of X identity cards.

Dr Meerab shared details about the Moorat March, scheduled from 3 pm to 6 pm on November 19, encouraging widespread participation in the event. The community leaders collectively urged the public to join in their advocacy for equal rights and to address the challenges faced by the transgender community in Pakistan.
