WASHINGTON (Web Desk) — Numerous US lawmakers, spanning across party lines, have urged the Biden administration to withhold recognition of Pakistan’s election results pending investigations into alleged irregularities.
According to the The News report, the US State Department echoed these concerns, stressing the need for thorough investigations into claims of interference and fraud. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, Ranking Member Gregory Meeks, and other prominent legislators have emphasized the importance of addressing concerns regarding vote counting irregularities and ballot tampering.
Congressman Brad Sherman emphasized the necessity for press freedom in reporting vote tabulations, while Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib emphasized the importance of supporting Pakistani democracy and preventing interference in the electoral process. Congresswoman Dina Titus emphasized the significance of adhering to the rule of law and condemned political violence and restrictions on freedoms of expression in Pakistan.
Similarly, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar urged the Department of State to refrain from recognizing results until credible investigations are conducted. Congressman Greg Casar stressed the need for a transparent democratic process, and Congresswomen Summer Lee and Susan Wild emphasized standing with the Pakistani people against state violence and voter suppression.
Additionally, the Pakistani American Political Action Committee (PAKPAC) called for investigations into alleged irregularities and secured bipartisan support in the House for a resolution affirming support for democracy in Pakistan. Meanwhile, Australia expressed concerns over restrictions on political parties in the elections and reiterated support for a democratic, stable, and prosperous Pakistan that upholds human rights and democratic principles.
