RAWALPINDI (Daily Point) — In a press statement on Thursday, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a seasoned politician and former prime minister, expressed concerns about the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, suggesting that they could lead to chaos in the country.
Abbasi asserted that the current election lacked purpose and called for a collaborative effort involving political, military, and judicial leadership to chart a meaningful path for the nation.
Speaking outside the anti-corruption department office in Rawalpindi, where he was being questioned in relation to embezzlement allegations concerning the Ghora Gali and Marri Road projects, Abbasi emphasized the need to avoid controversy surrounding the elections. He pointed to alleged rigging issues, claiming that the system had failed in 2018 and was unlikely to succeed now.
The former Prime Minister criticized the three major political parties for their inability to address the country’s problems, predicting the emergence of new political entities in Pakistan. Abbasi clarified that while he had stepped back from participating in the elections, he had not withdrawn from politics entirely. He hinted at the possibility of forming a new political party post-elections.
Abbasi raised concerns about the credibility of institutions such as the National Accountability Board (NAB) and other anti-corruption bodies, labeling them as the country’s most corrupt organizations. He questioned the fairness of the legal process, especially in light of the embezzlement case against him. According to Abbasi, the notice was sent to his spokesperson instead of him, a move he deemed as harassment during the election period. He highlighted his alleged involvement in awarding contracts for the construction of two roads, stating that the roads in question were not even built, according to information provided by the department.
