Why are Pakistani politicians involved in sugar business?

Farrukh Shahbaz Maryam nawaz Shehbaz Sharif cameras Warracih Shahzad Akbar

LAHORE (Daily Point) — Mirza Shahzad Akbar, adviser for accountability during the PTI regime, exposed the sugar mafia in Pakistan. He highlighted why politicians engage in the sugar business, calling it a blatant scam.

In an exclusive interview during “Farrukh Shahbaz Show”, Akbar revealed the immense power of the sugar mafia in Pakistan. He accused them of manipulating supply to generate billions in profits from the same sugar. According to Akbar, during their tenure, the production cost of sugar per kilogram was about 40 rupees. However, by controlling the supply, the sugar mafia illicitly earned profits ranging from 70 to 80 rupees per kilogram.

Akbar further maintained that the profit margins in the sugar business are exorbitant, prompting many politicians to engage in it. He alleged that through collusion to manipulate exports and restrict local supply, the sugar mafia rakes in illegal profits amounting to billions.
