Karachi blanketed in smog as air quality reaches ‘hazardous’ levels

KARACHI (Daily point) — Smog enveloped the city as air quality in Karachi deteriorated, according to a weather on Sunday.

According to private TV channel Geo News, Climate analyst Owais Haider stated that the air quality in the port city was “severely affected” due to increased pollution. Currently, Karachi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at 137, marked as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

Haider explained that the city’s air quality continues to be impacted by a light northeast wind, carrying polluted particles into the atmosphere. The weather conditions, characterized by high humidity and light air, contribute to the fog, which combines with particulate matter to create smog.

The minimum temperature in Karachi is expected to range between 13°C to 15°C in the upcoming week, according to Haider. He also mentioned the likelihood of light rain on December 21 and 22, 2023, under the influence of a western wind, which is anticipated to lead to an improvement in Karachi’s air quality.

In response to the escalating air quality issues, last month, the Sindh caretaker government, following the steps taken by the Punjab caretaker government, intensified efforts to address the worsening situation in Karachi. Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar urged citizens to wear face masks as a short-term measure to protect themselves from the health impacts associated with smog. The statement also called on schools and educational institutions to ensure that students wear face masks for their safety.
