Australia unveils fresh ‘skills in demand’ visa for recruiting overseas workers

Australia

SYDNEY (Daily Point) — In a strategic move to address key skill shortages and enhance labor market flexibility, Australia has recently revealed its innovative “Skills in Demand” visa.

This visa is set to replace the existing Temporary Skills Shortage (Subclass 482) visa, offering three distinct pathways tailored to attract temporary skilled migrants crucial to Australia’s national productivity.

Three Pathways for Skilled Migrants

1. Specialist Skills Pathway: This pathway targets highly skilled professionals earning a minimum of AUD 135,000 annually, surpassing the median income for their respective occupations. It covers all fields except trades, machinery operations, driving, and labor.

2. Core Skills Pathway: Designed for occupations identified as facing shortages, applicants must possess relevant skills and earn at least the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT).

3. Essential Skills Pathway (Under Development): Geared towards workers with essential skills earning below AUD 70,000, details for this pathway are in the finalization stage.

Key Advantages of the Skills in Demand Visa

1. Clear Path to Permanent Residency: The four-year visa period provides avenues for permanent residency for qualifying individuals.

2. Enhanced Worker Mobility: Unique provisions allow visa holders to change employers within the visa’s validity, with a 180-day grace period to secure a new sponsor while remaining employed.

3. Streamlined Processing: Expedited visa processing aims for an average of seven days for the Specialist Skills pathway and 21 days for other streams.

4. Employer Support: Initiatives like the Skilling Australia Fund are under consideration to assist employers in covering relocation costs, easing the burden of hiring foreign talent.

5. Modernized Sponsorship Pathway: Plans are underway to streamline the accredited sponsor pathway, facilitating faster access to skilled workers for approved businesses.

Migration Strategy with Rigorous Visa Rules

In conjunction with the Skills in Demand visa, the Australian government has unveiled its Migration Strategy, aiming to reshape the country’s migration system.

Key Changes Affecting International Students:

1. Enhanced English Proficiency Requirements: Aspiring international students will face more stringent English proficiency tests to ensure a higher level of language proficiency.

2. Scrutiny on Second Visa Applications: Reforms introduce heightened scrutiny on second visa applications, aligning with efforts to streamline the migration system.

Striking a Balance

This overhaul signifies a shift towards a more adaptable and responsive migration system, balancing employer needs with worker flexibility. The government emphasizes that the Skills in Demand visa not only addresses crucial skill shortages but also fosters a dynamic labor market conducive to both businesses and skilled individuals.
