ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — A 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Islamabad on Wednesday, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, and Chakwal, causing no reported loss of life or property.
The seismological center reported that the earthquake had a depth of 25 kilometers, with its epicenter located in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan. Additionally, India’s National Center for Seismology recorded a quake in the Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir region, specifically in Kishtwar.
It’s noteworthy that on Monday, December 18, another earthquake of magnitude 5.8 hit Islamabad, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre. The Pakistan Meteorological Department stated that the epicenter was 103 kilometers away from Doda in Indian Held Kashmir, with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale and a depth of 140 kilometers.
Earlier this year, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to 180 others.
Recent seismic activities in Turkey and Syria have sparked concerns about the safety of infrastructure in Pakistan. This raises questions about the preparedness of our region for potential seismic catastrophes, whether of a magnitude similar to recent earthquakes or even lower-intensity tremors.
