Lahore experiences alarming surge in Pneumonia cases

LAHORE (Daily Point) — Lahore is grappling with a concerning surge in pneumonia cases, leading to overcrowded emergency wards and outpatient departments (OPDs) in local hospitals.

The winter season has rendered individuals, especially those with chronic ailments and children, more susceptible to respiratory illnesses due to weakened immunity.

Dr. Husnain Javed, Head of the Punjab Public Health Reference Lab, highlighted the continuous rise in viral and bacterial pneumonia cases in the provincial capital. Factors such as smog, dry conditions, and cold weather contribute to the escalating numbers. Dr. Javed emphasized that individuals with compromised immunity, resulting from conditions like cardiac, kidney, liver diseases, or diabetes, are particularly vulnerable during colder temperatures.

Undiagnosed cases of influenza and COVID-19 were identified as major contributors to the increased pneumonia cases. Dr. Javed urged citizens to promptly seek medical attention for respiratory issues, emphasizing the significance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Furthermore, he noted a global trend of rising influenza and COVID-19 cases during the winter season, attributing this to the mutation of pneumonia. The situation extends beyond Pakistan, underscoring the importance of vigilance and proactive healthcare measures amid the challenging seasonal conditions.
