TikTok tightens rules for 2024 Election to tackle misinformation

(Daily point) — Leading up to the 2024 US presidential election, TikTok has revealed its updated strategies for tackling misinformation, drawing parallels to its previous approaches, as reported by Engadget.

The company is introducing an in-app election guide directing users to voting resources, such as mail-in voting instructions and registration forms. Notably, this guide is released earlier than in previous elections, aligning with the onset of the presidential primaries.

TikTok’s approach to handling false information in 2024 closely mirrors that of 2022. The platform remains steadfast in not allowing political ads, including those presented as branded content. Collaboration with fact-checking groups continues to determine information credibility, distinguishing between recommendations and marking content as “unverified.”

Although the specifics are yet to be unveiled, TikTok pledges to “expand media literacy resources to these labels” later in the year, potentially enhancing the usefulness of notifications for users encountering them.
