ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — In a boisterous session on Friday, Ayaz Sadiq secured the position of Speaker of the National Assembly by triumphing over Amir Dogar. Out of the 291 votes cast, 290 were deemed valid. Sadiq garnered 199 votes, while Dogar received 91.
Following the announcement, Sadiq extended a handshake to Dogar in a gesture of sportsmanship. The nomination papers for both positions were submitted on Thursday after 302 members of the house took their oath. The session, scheduled to commence at 10 am, witnessed Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz proposing Ayaz Sadiq for the role of speaker, while Amir Dogar was fielded by the Sunni Ittehad Council.
The competition for the deputy speaker’s position will see PPP’s Ghulam Mustafa Shah facing off against Junaid Akbar. The swearing-in of newly-elected National Assembly members occurred on Thursday amid disruptions from the Sunni Ittehad Council, which raised slogans.
Remarkably, at least 23 reserved seats in the National Assembly remain unallocated to any political party.
