ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — After electing as 24th Prime Minister (PM), Shehbaz Sharif said that work ahead is ‘difficult’ but not ‘impossible’, in his victory speech amid opposition protest.
In his inaugural address as the nation’s 24th Prime Minister, Shehbaz, flanked by party members, expressed gratitude to PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif for his nomination and acknowledged the support of allies like PPP and MQM-P. He reflected on Pakistan’s tumultuous political history, paying tribute to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto while condemning past injustices.
Subtly criticizing the previous government, Shehbaz emphasized his commitment to inclusive governance, contrasting it with what he described as vindictive politics. He outlined plans to tackle pressing issues, urging unity to overcome challenges.
Addressing the economic crisis, Shehbaz highlighted a significant budget deficit, attributing it to substantial service charges and provincial allocations. He questioned the sustainability of funding essential sectors and salaries, lamenting the reliance on loans.
He criticized the mismanagement of utilities, particularly the staggering circular debt in electricity and gas sectors, exacerbated by theft and inefficiencies. Shehbaz pledged subsidies for farmers and proposed a solar tube well program to bolster the agriculture sector.
Promising justice for past incidents like the May 9 riots, Shehbaz affirmed the government’s dedication to implementing the National Action Plan. He outlined plans to revitalize business, including the repeal of outdated regulations and collaboration with provinces to establish export zones.
