UAE issues red alert as unprecedented rains paralyze life

UAE DUbai Rain Red ALert

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) encountered historic levels of rainfall, the highest in 75 years, with even Dubai experiencing flooding due to the heavy downpour.

Following this unprecedented weather event, the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology issued a red alert, urging residents to remain vigilant as severe weather conditions persisted.

Although the rainfall has ceased in UAE states for the past eight hours, the government has advised people to stay indoors.

Dubai’s leadership has taken immediate actions in response to the rain emergency, coordinating with the crisis and disaster management team.

Media reports indicate that Dubai received rainfall equivalent to two years’ worth in just one day.

Sanitation crews in the Gulf country are working diligently to drain water from the streets. Efforts are underway in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other states to clear accumulated water from roads.

Tragically, reports have emerged of an Emirati citizen being swept away in floodwaters in Ras Al Khaimah.

Al Ain, also known as ‘Khatm Al Shakla’, experienced a remarkable 254.8mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, according to meteorological authorities.

Thunderstorms and lightning persisted throughout the night, intensifying the downpour into Wednesday.

Forecasters anticipate continued unstable weather patterns from Tuesday through Thursday, driven by a prolonged “low surface pressure” system and two waves of turbulent weather sweeping across the UAE.

In response to the escalating weather conditions, the UAE government has mandated remote work for its employees on Wednesday, extending the period of remote work for government entities and remote learning for private school students.

Private sector companies have also been encouraged to implement remote work arrangements to prioritize employee safety.

The heavy rainfall has disrupted transportation, causing delays and diversions of flights at airports and congestion on major highways, including Sheikh Zayed Road.

Meanwhile, Oman has also experienced heavy rains, resulting in 18 reported fatalities. Authorities in Oman have instructed people to work from home as tram services were lost in floodwaters.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has faced significant disruptions due to the inclement weather, with flights delayed, diverted, and cancelled.

Road congestion and power outages in some areas have prompted residents to take precautions.

The public and passengers have been urged to remain patient as airport management works to restore normal operations.
