PML-N secures majority in NA and provincial seats in 2024 by-elections

PML-N By-elections

Amid cheers and celebrations, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) revelers hailed victory as unofficial results revealed the party’s dominance in the April 21 by-elections.

In one of Pakistan’s most extensive by-polls, the ruling PMLN party secured victory in 10 out of the 21 contested constituencies, as per preliminary and unofficial results. Private TV channel reported these early results as the vote tallying continued for both national and provincial seats on Sunday.

The electoral process saw a temporary suspension of cellular and internet services in specific districts of Punjab and Balochistan to ensure its integrity.

PML-N swept both national assembly constituencies in Punjab and secured several provincial assembly seats in the province. Additionally, it clinched one Balochistan Assembly seat. PMLN’s allies IPP and PMLQ also secured one seat each in Punjab, while PTI’s SIC failed to win any.

Results for three Punjab Assembly constituencies were pending as of Monday morning. In KP, independent candidate Mubarak Zaib emerged victorious against SIC candidates on a National Assembly and a provincial assembly seat in Bajur. Zaib’s victory was notable, given that his brother Rehan was tragically killed a day before the February 8 polls.

PTI managed to secure one NA seat from Dera Ismail Khan, where CM Ganadpur’s brother Faisal Amin emerged victorious. PTI/SIC also won one provincial seat from Kohat. PPP secured an NA seat from Sindh’s Qambar Shahdadkot, while BNP-M attained one provincial seat in Balochistan.

The by-elections covered five National Assembly, 12 Punjab Assembly, two Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and two Balochistan Assembly seats. Polling commenced at 8 am and concluded at 5 pm for seats vacated due to candidates winning multiple seats or where elections were postponed in the February 8 general elections following a candidate’s demise.

The Election Commission of Pakistan oversaw the repolling in PB 50 Kalla Abdullah constituency.
