(APP) — Pakistan celebrated its 78th Independence Day with a renewed commitment to build the country into a true Islamic welfare state, echoing the spirit of the Pakistan Movement.
The day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered in mosques across the nation, seeking peace, solidarity, and prosperity for Pakistan.
The main event was a national flag-hoisting ceremony in Islamabad, attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with similar ceremonies held in various provincial, divisional, and district headquarters. At 7:58 am, sirens rang out nationwide, heralding the grand flag-hoisting ceremony at 8:00 am. Change of guard ceremonies were also held at the mausoleums of Allama Iqbal in Lahore and Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi.
In cities across the country, various programs were organized to mark the occasion. Public and private sector departments hosted a wide range of activities, including seminars, discussions, exhibitions, artistic displays, national song renditions, and debate competitions, all reflecting on the sacrifices and achievements of the Pakistan Movement.
Streets and avenues were adorned with flags, banners, and buntings, creating a festive atmosphere. Prominent buildings were illuminated to commemorate the day, while traffic management plans were implemented to ensure public safety as people flocked to parks, markets, and other public spaces to celebrate.
President Asif Ali Zardari, in his Independence Day message, stressed the importance of unity, integrity, and economic stability. He urged the nation to follow the teachings of Quaid-e-Azam, invest in youth and women, and focus on strengthening democratic institutions. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, acknowledging their ongoing struggles for self-determination.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy and reduce inflation. He paid tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan’s forefathers and acknowledged the contributions of overseas Pakistanis. The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the oppressed people of Kashmir and Palestine.
Internationally, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev extended their congratulations to the Pakistani people, highlighting the strong ties between their countries and Pakistan.
The day was marked by nationwide celebrations, with children and youth particularly enthusiastic as cities turned green and white with Independence Day decorations. The spirit of the day was one of reflection, pride, and a renewed commitment to building a prosperous and united Pakistan.
