OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4o, has introduced groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence, capable of processing and generating text, audio, and visual content.
This multimodal functionality represents a significant technological leap with far-reaching implications for various industries.
Maribel Lopez, an AI analyst and the founder of the research and strategy consulting firm Lopez Research, discussed these implications with Business Insider. According to Lopez, the diverse capabilities of multimodal models like GPT-4o will impact numerous industries, particularly those involving text, video, and audio.
Lopez suggested that the effects on employment might not be entirely negative. She highlighted that professions in the manual labor sector, such as electricians and plumbers, could benefit from AI integration. AI-powered tools could assist these workers in troubleshooting and problem-solving, enhancing their efficiency without replacing them. “For workers who fix specialized equipment, AI might be very helpful in troubleshooting or fixing problems. But it won’t replace them because they have to be there to do it,” Lopez explained.
Lopez also emphasized that while some industries might smoothly transition to integrating AI, others could face challenges. She noted that robots designed for repetitive tasks, like welding bolts, are suitable for some sectors but not for complex blue-collar labor.
Industries such as supply chains and finance could see significant transformations, with AI potentially taking over a substantial portion of data-driven tasks. Lopez estimated that AI might eventually handle 20% to 30% of tasks performed by computer workers. Paralegals, for example, might find their roles shifting from document tracking and summary writing to new responsibilities, facilitated by AI.
“The AI challenge is that it forces all of us to enhance our skill sets. It will be a change for all of us,” Lopez stated, highlighting the necessity for continuous adaptation.
The capabilities of GPT-4o were showcased through a series of demo videos on Monday, demonstrating the technology’s improved voice and vision abilities. This new model underscores the transformative potential of AI across various facets of the workforce.
