Interior Ministry discloses true motive for Twitter shutdown in Pakistan

(Daily Point) — The Interior Ministry has submitted a detailed report to the Islamabad High Court regarding the suspension of the social media platform referred to as X, previously known as Twitter.

The report highlights legal and factual inconsistencies in the petition opposing the suspension of X, emphasizing that X is not registered in Pakistan and does not conform to Pakistani regulations.

The necessity of imposing restrictions to protect national security stems from X’s failure to comply with governmental laws and regulations.

The primary objective behind the ban on X is to prevent its exploitation as a platform for disseminating extremist ideologies and false information, rather than stifling freedom of expression. The Ministry’s decision to take action against X is founded on its commitment to safeguarding citizens and upholding national security.

Furthermore, the report discloses that X’s non-compliance with Pakistani laws prompted its suspension. The Federal Investigation Agency’s cyber crimes wing had requested X to block accounts involved in spreading misleading propaganda against the Chief Justice of Pakistan, a request that went unanswered by X.

The recent developments coincide with the government’s endeavors to regulate social media platforms, with agreements in place to ensure adherence to Pakistani laws. The suspension of X aligns with security considerations and does not contravene constitutional rights.

In its response to the court, the Interior Ministry clarified that the request to suspend X does not violate fundamental rights and could be dismissed in the initial stages.

The Ministry’s stance underscores that the suspension of X aims to encourage responsible usage of social media platforms in accordance with the law, reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and national security. This decisive measure against X represents a significant stride toward achieving these vital objectives.
