(Daily Point) — Algeria has recently achieved a milestone by surpassing Pakistan in hosting the world’s third-largest mosque, marking it as Africa’s largest.
According to a report from Al Jazeera News, the Grand Mosque of Algiers, locally known as Djamaa El-Djazair, was inaugurated by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday. With a capacity to accommodate 1,200,000 worshippers, the mosque features the world’s tallest minaret, standing at an impressive 265 meters (869 feet). The only mosques larger than this one are in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah and Madina.
The seven-year construction effort has resulted in a sprawling modernist structure spread across nearly 70 acres. Adorned with wood and marble and infused with Arabic and North African influences, the mosque also boasts additional features such as a helicopter pad and a library capable of housing a million books.
Constructed by a Chinese company, the massive mosque reportedly incurred a cost of nearly $900 million. This accomplishment displaces the Grand Jamia Mosque of Pakistan, previously the world’s third-largest mosque located in Bahria Town Karachi, with a capacity of 800,000.
