Microsoft announces major relief for older PC users with Windows 11

Windows 11 Microsoft

Microsoft, the technology giant, has announced a solution for users currently running Windows 10 on their computer systems.

This development allows certain PC owners to upgrade to the latest version, Windows 11, addressing significant bugs that previously hindered computers with specific Intel 11th Generation Rocket Lake processors from running the new operating system, as reported by Tom’s Hardware.

Users of PCs already equipped with Windows 11 encountered these bugs shortly after its release in 2021. Initially, Microsoft restricted upgrades from Windows 10 to 11 for affected systems only.

The issue stemmed from drivers for Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) on certain Rocket Lake processors crashing in Windows 11. Specifically, the driver “Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller,” found in the Device Manager under Sound, video, and game controllers, versions 10.29.0.5152 and 10.30.0.5152, were identified with errors.

These crashes led to the appearance of blue screens, prompting Microsoft, based in Redmond, to release fixed versions of the drivers: any Intel SST driver version named 10.30.00.5714 or 10.29.00.5714 and later.

It’s essential to note that the numbering of the drivers does not necessarily indicate newer versions, as 10.30.x drivers may not be newer than 10.29.x.

After updating the drivers using the Windows Update tool or from Intel’s official website, users can upgrade to Windows 11 after waiting for two days.
