ISLAMABAD (Daily Point) — The National Highways and Motorway Police have declared stringent fines for traffic rule violations, with penalties reaching up to Rs10,000. This new regulation is set to be enforced starting January 1.

The fines will be uniformly applied to all vehicle types without discrimination, covering all highways under the jurisdiction of NHMP, as stated in a Sunday press release by the NHMP. The timing of this decision coincides with the challenge of heavy fog in Punjab, prompting daily traffic updates on social media to prevent accidents that have historically occurred on the highway during foggy conditions.

The fine structure begins at Rs1,000, with specific amounts outlined for various violations. For instance:

  • Violating maximum speed limits incurs fines of Rs1,500 for motorcycles, Rs2,500 for cars, Rs5,000 for heavy traffic vehicles (HTVs), and Rs10,000 for passenger coaches.
  • Luggage overloading results in an additional fine of Rs10,000.
  • Driving on the opposite lane attracts an extra fine of Rs2,500.
  • Traffic signal violations incur fines ranging from Rs1,000 for a yellow signal to Rs5,000 for a red signal.
  • Loading luggage in a hazardous manner results in an additional fine of Rs10,000.
  • Overcrowded passenger coaches face an extra fine of Rs5,000.
  • Driving vehicles without lights leads to an additional fine of Rs5,000.
  • Overtaking in prohibited areas has fines of Rs1,500 for motorcycles, cars, and light traffic vehicles, while passenger coaches and heavy traffic vehicles face fines of Rs3,000.
  • Not yielding the right of way incurs an additional fine of Rs1,000.
  • Obstructing the path of an emergency vehicle results in an extra fine of Rs5,000.

Additionally, the police announced a ban on the entry of vehicles without an M-tag and recommended the installation of an M-tag to avoid complications. Drivers are advised to visit the nearest M-tag center with their CNIC, car, and required documents to obtain the necessary tag.
