ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) — The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has issued a warning to shoe and clothing brands, urging them to transparently disclose actual and discounted prices on sale items.

Brands failing to comply may face enforcement actions, as per the CCP advisory. Amidst a seasonal surge in discounts, the CCP uncovered deceptive marketing practices, potentially violating Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010.

A survey identified 27 brands offering ‘flat’ discounts, with discrepancies noticed in advertised versus actual prices. Issues included higher in-store prices than advertised, illegible ‘terms & conditions’ disclaimers, and differing terms for online and retail purchases.

Approximately 96% of surveyed outlets displayed such discrepancies, hindering informed consumer decisions.

The CCP advises consumers to scrutinize discount terms and conditions to avoid falling prey to deceptive practices. The CCP has already issued guidelines prohibiting ‘Bait and Switch Advertising,’ emphasizing clear disclosure of terms and conditions to prevent false impressions.

The CCP remains committed to promoting free competition, economic efficiency, and consumer protection under the Competition Act.
