PTI candidate Sanam Javaid again arrested soon after bail

LAHORE (Daily Point) — Sanam Javaid Khan, a politician associated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was arrested shortly after her bail plea was granted by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Monday.

The arrest is related to her alleged involvement in arson at a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) office.

Simultaneously, investigation police took Sanam, who was already in custody, into custody again for her alleged role in arson during the riots on May 9. These riots erupted following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan in a corruption case. Sanam, formerly known as a social media activist for the party, will now be transferred to the Shadman police station, where a new case against her has been registered.

Earlier in the day, the court delivered its reserved verdict on Sanam’s bail plea, following arguments from counsels. The case pertains to the burning of the office of PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif, and the bail plea was filed against the charges brought by the Model Town police.

Despite being incarcerated, Sanam, a PTI candidate, has announced her intention to participate in the upcoming February 8 polls. She is set to compete against PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz and former National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq from Lahore. Sanam submitted her nomination papers on December 19 to contest polls for a provincial assembly seat, PP-150, as well as for two National Assembly seats, NA-120 and NA-119.

Her initial nomination papers were rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), a decision she contested in the Lahore High Court (LHC) Appellate Tribunal against the returning officer (RO). Despite the tribunal upholding the RO’s decision, Sanam filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, which was approved, allowing her and other PTI leaders like Parvez Elahi and Shuakat Basra to contest polls.

Following the Supreme Court’s verdict last Friday, Sanam has been granted permission to contest polls from NA-119, NA-120, and PP-150. She is one of several PTI members who have been in custody for over eight months in connection with the May 9 riots, which erupted after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan in a corruption case. Sanam faces multiple charges, including an attack on the Corps Commander House in Lahore and the torching of police vehicles in the Cantonment area during the violent protests last year.
