LAHORE (Daily Point) — The interim government in Punjab has opted to replace the practice of granting government jobs to the offspring of deceased employees with a monetary compensation system.

The Punjab Finance Department issued a notification, approved by the cabinet, officially discontinuing the previous policy under Section 17-A of the Punjab Civil Services Rules.

Under the new arrangement, the amount of monetary compensation varies based on the grade and rank of the deceased employee. Families of those in Grades 1-4 will receive Rs. 5 million, while those in Grades 5-10 will be provided Rs. 7.5 million. Similarly, families of employees in Grades 11-15 will receive Rs. 10 million, and those in Grades 16-17 will get Rs. 15 million. The highest financial assistance of Rs. 20 million will be extended to families of officials in Grades 18-22, as outlined in the government’s notification.

This marks a significant departure from the previous compensation rates, where families of Grades 1-4 received Rs. 1.6 million, Grades 5-10 got Rs. 1.9 million, Grades 11-15 were allocated Rs. 2.2 million, Grades 16-17 received Rs. 2.5 million, Grades 18-19 obtained Rs. 3.4 million, and Grades 20 and above were granted Rs. 4 million.

The government asserts that this decision aims to streamline the recruitment process, enhance transparency, and promote merit. Additionally, officials argue that providing financial compensation is a more practical alternative to job offers, effectively eliminating legal and administrative complexities.
