The messaging platform Telegram is poised to reach a remarkable milestone of one billion monthly active users within the next year, as revealed by its CEO, Pavel Durov.

In a recent conversation with former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson, Durov likened Telegram’s growth to a “forest fire,” emphasizing its rapid expansion in the social media landscape.

Founded in 2013 by the 39-year-old entrepreneur in Dubai, Telegram has seen significant growth despite its challenges. Durov, who left Russia in 2014, faced pressures from the Russian government due to his launch of encrypted messaging, a project initiated by his brother. “I prefer freedom over obedience,” Durov commented on his departure from Russia.

Currently boasting 900 million active users, Telegram is in close competition with Meta-owned WhatsApp, which has over two billion monthly active users.

Durov, who has a net worth of $15.5 billion, highlighted that while some governments have attempted to exert pressure on him, Telegram remains committed to maintaining neutrality and avoiding involvement in geopolitics.

The Financial Times reported in March that Telegram is considering a U.S. stock listing once it achieves profitability.

Known for its popularity in Russia and recognized as one of the leading social media platforms globally, Telegram stands alongside giants like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat in terms of user engagement and reach.
