WASHINGTON (Daily Point) — The United States (US) has taken note of alleged fraud in Pakistan’s general elections, held on February 8, and has called for an independent probe.

During a daily press briefing, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of allowing the legal system in Pakistan to play itself out, stating, “Right now we think it’s a matter of first course, the legal system play itself out in Pakistan, that’s the appropriate first step to take, and we think that’s the step that should be taken.”

In response to inquiries about US lawmakers urging the Biden administration to advocate for an independent investigation into the claims of election fraud, Miller stated that they are open to considering additional steps but need clarity on the proposed body for such an investigation.

Regarding the claims of interference and fraud, Miller reiterated the importance of a thorough investigation by Pakistan’s legal system, affirming the US’s commitment to monitor the situation in the days ahead.

While acknowledging the competitive nature of the election and the people’s ability to exercise their choice, Miller expressed respect for the democratic process and readiness to work with the newly formed government. The US has publicly and privately conveyed concerns about irregularities in the election process, aligning with the EU, the UK, and other countries in doing so.

The spokesperson emphasized the US’s stance on upholding the rule of law, respecting the constitution, supporting a free press, and ensuring a vibrant civil society in the run-up to elections. Additionally, Miller condemned political and election-related violence and restrictions on internet and cell phone services that negatively impacted the electoral process.
