LAHORE (Daily Point) — The prospect of either Nawaz Sharif or his brother Shehbaz Sharif assuming the role of Prime Minister for the fourth time is shrouded in uncertainty, according to sources within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

According to the Local Newspaper The News, a close aide of Nawaz Sharif disclosed that the former premier has not conveyed any decision to his party’s second-tier leadership regarding a potential fourth term. Despite the lack of clarity within the party ranks, the PML-N has adopted the slogan of electing Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister for the fourth time, describing it as a “sweet revenge of democracy” against those who ousted him in 2017.

The party’s stance on the matter appears resolute for the initial phase, with the intention of securing Nawaz Sharif’s return to the premiership. However, the subsequent phase, involving the decision of when and whom to nominate as a successor, remains contingent on Nawaz Sharif’s discretion. Independent sources express uncertainty about Nawaz Sharif’s inclination to assume the prime ministership for another term, speculating that the narrative may be strategically crafted to appeal to a broad voter base.

Potential successors are also under consideration, with Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz emerging as contenders. Maryam’s relative inexperience and perceived unacceptability in certain quarters may limit her candidacy, leading to speculation that she could be assigned a significant role in Punjab.

Shehbaz Sharif, distinguished by his experience and a reputation for collaborating with all stakeholders, holds an advantage in the race. Concerns within the PML-N persist regarding Nawaz Sharif’s historically troubled relationship with the establishment during his previous tenures.

Some speculate that Nawaz Sharif may recognize the changed ground realities in favor of a hybrid democracy and shift his focus towards economic reforms for the nation’s prosperous future.
